Aromatically this floats out of the glass, intense and concentrated but full of light and life. Waves of flavour come at you, from crushed raspberries, pomegrante and blackcurrant to fresher redcurrant and lemongrass set against richer truffles, crayon and smoked earth. Mouthwatering, this really is a vintage where you can see the impact of the biodynamic vineyard work, with a greater sense of sculpting and violet florality than you would have found in this Pauillac powerhouse a decade earlier, without sacrificing structure and depth. As it opens, the sweetness of a ripe vintage comes through in edges of smoked caramel. Wonderful expression of 97% Cabernet fruit – a complete departure from the brooding Latour of a decade ago. Beautifully fragrant and fresh but the Pauillac weight is there and great purity too. Wie Château Latour wel eens heeft bezocht herkent direct het torentje van het label; de Saint-Lambert toren. Getuige van het ontstaan van deze Premier Grand Cru Classé, al in 1331. Sindsdien is er onafgebroken wijn verbouwd en geproduceerd. Ook nu weer wisselt het eigendom van Latour om uiteindelijk in 1993 in handen te komen van Francois Pinault. Hij zet Frederic Engerer aan het roer en vanaf dat moment neemt de kwaliteit van de wijnen een verdere vlucht. Volgens velen is Latour de verpersoonlijking van Pauillac en de absolute top in Bordeaux. Geconcentreerde, diepe, krachtige en zuivere wijnen die tijd nodig hebben en wel onsterfelijk lijken. Zelfs de tweede en derde wijnen zijn prachtig. Totaal 78 hectare wijngaarden waarvan 74,2% is beplant met cabernet sauvignon, 23,8% met merlot, 1,8% cabernet franc en nog en beetje petit verdot. De 47 biologisch verbouwde wijngaarden “Enclos” vormen de kern voor de wijnen. Tweede wijn: Les Forts de Latour. Derde wijn: Le Pauillac de Latour.
