“Notes of cassis, bilberry, damson, charcoal and liquorice, with pure blackberry juice filling the crevices in between. The tannins are firm but flexible, allowing for some lightness. Hugely complex, but still hugely young. This vintage was made from the first year of the full maturity for these young vines – now 14 years old, 3.55pH. At this youthful stage you can feel the smoky, grilled brush of the oak, which is 70% new, with medium toast, and it’s double toasted to ensure there are no vanillin flavours. This wine will climb upwards and outwards towards the horizon, staking a claim for greatness in 2015.” | Robert Parker | 2018 | 100
Château L’Eglise Clinet is een klein wijndomein dat zich mag meten met de allerbeste wijnen van Pomerol. Tot ver in de vorige eeuw was het wijngoed een bijzaak en was het een wijnhandelshuis (négociant) dat er wijn maakte. Vaak van weinig bijzondere kwaliteit. Vanaf de jaren tachtig gaat Denis Durantou (de zoon van de eigenaar) zich bemoeien met het wijngoed en al snel verandert alles. Grote renovaties volgen en de kwaliteit neemt snel toe. Het toevoegen van cabernet franc met wijnstokken van zo’n 70 jaar oud geven de wijnen hun typische stijl mee voor Château L’Eglise Clinet. Slechts 4,4 hectare zijn beplant met 85% merlot, 14% cabernet franc en 1% malbec. Volle, geconcentreerde en vlezige wijnen met een enorme rijpingspotentie. Tweede wijn: La Petite Église
