Opaque purple-black in color, it needs significant aeration and swirling to coax out evocative notes of black cherry preserves, raspberry pie, blackcurrant pastilles and damp soil, before launching into gorgeous floral and spice notions of red roses, cinnamon stick, star anise and cardamom, with a waft of crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate reveals a lot of depth and polish, delivering mouth-coating red and black fruits with loads of fragrant earth and floral sparks, framed by velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral tinged. Cinquième Grand Cru Classé Château Pontet-Canet uit Pauillac staat vandaag de dag voor velen als het beste en het modernste wat Pauillac te bieden heeft: Diepe concentratie, structuur, tannines maar ook elegantie. De naam Pontet-Canet is een combinatie van de naam van een eerdere eigenaar, Jean-Francois de Pontet, en de wijngaarden die liggen in het Canet gebied rondom het Château. Sinds halverwege de jaren ’90 heeft het domein zich sterk ontwikkeld en hoewel het een 5e cru is laat de kwaliteit zich tegenwoordig meten met 2e Cru’s en soms zelfs 1e. 100% biodynamische wijnbouw en 81 hectare is beplant met 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc en 2% Petit Verdot. Tweede wijn: Les Hauts de Pontet-Canet.
