Highest Cabernet Sauvignon on record (since 94% for the 2010 vintage), stately and reserved at first, then totally joyful. The right austerity, coupled with squid ink character and fabulous hidden depths that are going to take their time to fully unroll, with the incense of the oak coming through only after a good 10 minutes in the glass, you barely perceive it on the first tasting. What a beautiful Mouton, great stuff from wine director Jean-Philippe Danjoy. 52% Grand Vin, basically pure old vine Cabernet. And an interesting side note – in September there was no weekend picking, a clear indication that there was no stress about the harvest dates. 3.76pH. Druiven: 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot
Château Mouton Rothschild, Premier Grand Cru Classé uit Pauillac, één van de sterren uit Bordeaux die wordt geroemd om de rijke, weelderige en exotische wijnen. Château Mouton Rothschild genoot altijd al bekendheid maar toen Phillipe Rothschild als 20-jarige de leiding kreeg veranderde praktisch alles. Ten goede overigens. Zo werd Château Mouton Rothschild het eerste wijnhuis dat alle wijn zelf ging bottelen op Château en daarmee alles in eigen beheer kreeg. Later zou Phillipe Rotschild de eerste wijnmaker zijn die marketing inzette als wapen en de naamsbekendheid gebruikte voor een wijn die voor iedereen te betalen zou zijn; Mouton Cadet. Verder was en is Château Mouton Rothschild het enige wijndomein uit de 1855-classificatie die een wijziging toegewezen kreeg. Het ging in 1973 over van 2e Grand Cru Classé naar 1e Grand Cru Classé. Elke jaar wordt er een nieuw label ontworpen door een andere artiest. Ook dit is uniek in de wijnwereld. Tweede wijn: Le Petit Mouton. Er wordt ook nog een prachtige witte wijn gemaakt; Aile d’Argent. Château Mouton Rothschild bezit tevens Château Clerc Milon en Château d’Armailhac in Pauillac.
