Slightly earthy notes on the nose, with brambly fruit coming through on the attack. A real sense of lightness and delicacy, with some attractive brushed tannins. Clear precision to the structure of the wine, and it opens up in the glass, allowing the initial austerity to fade as the fruit fattens up in the glass. Lacks the plush concentration of some vintages of Poyferré, but extremely enjoyable and accomplished, with plenty of house style. Take your time, be patient with this one and trust that it will come around a little sooner than the 2016 and 2018. | Decanter | 2019 | 94

Château Léoville Poyferré, Deuxième Grand Cru Classé uit Saint-Julien is een domein met wijnen van een hoog kwaliteitsniveau. Ooit bestond het uit maar liefst 200 hectare, maar werd in het verleden opgedeeld in drie aparte domeinen zoals we deze tegenwoordig kennen: Château Léoville Poyferré, Château Léoville Barton en Château Léoville Las Cases. Château Léoville Poyferré was een een pionier met nieuwe aangewende landbouw- en productietechnieken. Zo werden de wijnstokken vervangen voor stokken met kleinere druiven die meer concenctratie geven en bijvoorbeeld het gebruik van houtopvoeding. Tegenwoordig telt het domein 60 hectare met 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc en 2% Petit Verdot. De wijnen zijn fruitig, krachtig, geconcentreerd en kruidig. Tweede wijn: Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré. Ook in eigendom: Château Moulin Riche en Château Le Crock in Saint-Estèphe.
