Deep damson colour, poised and intense, a serious wine with crushed mint, graphite and bitter black chocolate on the opening beats, setting the tone for a slow reveal of confident St Julien character. Powerful tannins convey purity and precision, set against creamy cassis and bilberry fruits, with softer smoked earth and baked spice, and a slate finish. Druiven: 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot

In absolute topconditie is Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Deuxième Grand Cru Classé uit Saint-Julien. Sinds 2003 wordt het geleid door Bruno Borie en die vaart zijn eigen koers. Tegenwoordig wordt voor de eerste wijn alleen nog het fruit uit het hart van de wijngaarden gebruikt met enorme kwaliteits-verbetering als gevolg. Intens geconcentreerde en smakelijke wijnen, complex, verfijnd en een uitzonderlijke puurheid van fruit. De 75 hectaren zijn beplant met 70% cabernet sauvignon en 30% merlot. Tweede wijn: La Croix de Beaucaillou. Uit dezelfde stal komt Château Lalande-Borie.
